Encoder selection starts with the application's position accuracy and behavior on power loss needs. Is homing acceptable, or is absolute position required?
- Resolution — required position accuracy (PPR/bit)
- Type — incremental (homing) vs absolute (retains on power loss)
- Output/interface — HTL/TTL, SSI, EnDat, EtherCAT
- Mechanical — shaft/hollow-shaft, diameter, IP rating
In vibration/dirt-prone environments a magnetic encoder is more robust than optical; accuracy may drop slightly.
