How to Choose an Industrial Power Supply

Criteria for choosing a 24 V DC power supply: current, efficiency, redundancy and inrush current.

3 min readUpdated: 2026-07-07

The 24 V DC power supply, the heart of the cabinet, if undersized causes voltage sag and unstable PLC/sensor operation. Adding 25-30% margin to the total load current is standard.

  • Current — total load + 25-30% margin
  • Peak current — inrush of contactor/valve coils
  • Redundancy — dual supply + diode module for critical systems
Ageing supplies lose efficiency and overheat; for unclear faults measure the 24 V rail under load.
