How to Choose an HMI (Operator Panel)

Choosing an operator panel by screen size, resolution, communication, environmental rating (IP) and software ecosystem.

4 min readUpdated: 2026-07-07

Choosing an HMI balances the information density the operator needs with the physical/environmental conditions of the panel. A wrong choice causes readability and maintenance issues.

  • Screen size/resolution — data and graphics density to show
  • Communication — same protocol as the PLC (PROFINET, Modbus, EtherNet/IP)
  • Environment (IP) — touch type, temperature, vibration, washdown
  • Software — engineering tool and PLC integration
Choosing the HMI and PLC from the same ecosystem (one software, one support line) markedly eases commissioning and maintenance.
