What Is EtherCAT?

The 'processing on the fly' principle of the high-speed, low-latency EtherCAT protocol and its motion applications.

4 min readUpdated: 2026-07-05

EtherCAT is a very fast fieldbus where a single Ethernet frame reads and writes data from all slaves 'on the fly' as it passes through. This achieves microsecond-level synchronization (Distributed Clocks).

EtherCAT is preferred for low-latency applications like multi-axis synchronized motion, robotics and CNC.
